Moving the Kids!

Between now and the day of your move

Have you discussed the idea of the move with your child? Give him/her a chance to get use to the thought. If you think moving is nerve-racking for you, consider what it is like for him/her! Here are a couple of suggestions to help your family during the transition:

  • Make your child a part of the process! Bring him/her along to see the new house, if possible. If not, show him/her pictures (including some of his/her future room).
  • If your child is very young, read a story. Picture books, illustrating a move in which the main character is affected, helps a young child relate to the upcoming event.
  • Invite your child to participate in the decorating of his/her future room. Why not let him/her choose new accessories for the room that will add excitement and something to look forward to.
  • Organize a garage sale and, if your child is old enough, allow him/her to sell his/her old toys and keep the earnings to put towards new items.
  • Throw a going-away party for your child and his/her friends. Make the moment last by creating a photo album. Even more, provide him/her with his/her own camera and encourage him/her to document the whole move through his/her own eyes!
  • So that your child does not lose contact with his/her current friends, put together an address book in order to stay in contact. There are myriad new gadgets available that every child would love.
  • Sign your child up for an extra-curricular activity in your new community. Don’t wait! The sooner you child starts to make new friends, the better.
  • Have a family meeting. Go over the details of the moving day, and make clear to each member his/her role. Take this time to respond to any unanswered questions or concerns.

Should your child be present during the day of your move?

It is preferable, for at least one part of the day, to include him/her in the transition

  • If your child is younger, ask someone reliable to watch over him/her. Ensure that your child’s routine is maintained as much as possible. Organize an area where they can play despite the kerfuffle.
  • Prepare a “magic box” of your child’s favourite toys and games ready to be opened upon arriving at the new house.  It is important that your child is surrounded by familiar things.
  • Food is rarely a top priority during the day of your move. In this way, prepare your child a “special” lunch so that he/she has healthy options to enjoy.
  • Quickly set-up your child’s room.  His/her bed, furniture, and accessories will comfort them in their new surroundings.

After the move

  • Help your child make new friends. Visit the community in search of other children close in age to your child. If your child is shy, encourage him/her to introduce himself/herself.
  • A welcome party? Invite local children and their parents to meet-and-greet. Everyone will have a good time!
  • Is your child internet-savvy? Encourage your child to continuously stay in touch with old friends by sending emails or even photo-attachments from the going-away party

Have a great family move!!!
